After tiring of the late-night, hard-drinking lifestyle he had adopted, he prayed to God and was shortly introduced to the LDS church. Although he was troubled at not being able to hold the LDS priesthood as a Black Latter-day Saint, he turned to the Lord in prayer and was baptized after "the answer came back loud and clear. It was the truth!” Victor and his family were the foundation of the LDS church in Jamaica for nearly two decades before moving to the US in 2000. Victor resides in Orem, Utah with his beautiful wife Verna. They are the proud parents of 5 children and 12 grandchildren, two of which are currently serving LDS missions.

Pay-Per-Pew: What if we had to pay for church seats?

On the surface paying for a seat at church sounds outrageous, but outrageous is right up our alley! The Sistas weigh the pros and cons of pay-per-pew church seating.

PRO: If you pay for your seat you are more likely to show up for church. Church folk don't like to waste money.

CON: People will use not being able to afford seating as an excuse not to attend church. We can see it now, people handpicking the Sundays they can "afford" to attend; Christmas, Mother's Day, Easter.

PRO: No need to save seats. No more news stories about grown men fist fighting over church pews. Now hymn books, scriptures, jackets and diaper bags can be used for their intended purposes and not to reserve a row.

CON: Church ushers would be out of a job. No more folks in white gloves guiding you down the isle and to your seat.

CON: Church ushers would have a new job. Evicting people mid-service from their pew for missing the monthly payment. Getting your pew repoed would be mighty embarrassing.

PRO: Gets rid of the unassigned-assigned-seat-program. The one where families sit in the same seats each Sunday and regular congregation members instinctively agree to abide by the unofficially-official-chapel-seating-chart. Problems arise when instead of occupying Wall Street uniformed visitors occupy your seat.

CON: Chronically late churchgoers would no longer feel a sense of urgency to get to church if they don't run the risk of not finding a seat.

PRO: That one kid who is tasked with getting to church earlier than everyone else to save a row for the entire family can sleep in a little later.

CON: People might start trying to run side hustles like; Pimp Your Pew, then we'd start seeing pews lined with Swarovski crystals. Or Pew Now Pay Later.

PRO: At churches where the air conditioning only blows at the front of the chapel to cool the preacher off when they start to sweat cause the Spirit of God like a fire is burning, you can reserve a cool seat near the front and not have to ferociously fan your face with your church fan.

CON: At the LDS church all the front pews will be vacant while bidding wars start for the cushioned seats at the back of the chapel.

PRO: No more need for church fundraisers.

CON: You will know if your preaching is not on point, because nobody is going pay for a seat to a bad sermon.

PRO: People don't like to sleep through something they paid for.

CON: People start murmuring: If we have to pay for the pew tithing should only be 7%; My pew value went down when the Jones bought the pew next to us; Keep your cheerio crumbs in your own pew; They have no kids and bought that big ole pew in the middle row so the two of them could show off; Obviously the pastors/preachers/bishops wife should get a free pew!

Okay y'all, after careful consideration we're gonna go ahead and state that pay-per-pew is probably not a good idea, at least not in our wards. But if the system gets implemented please don't act shocked when you see us with a lil' side hustle; for a small fee we will pre-place snacks in your pew so while your soul gets fed your stomach does too!

Is seat saving a problem in your congregation? Does your ward have unassigned-assigned-seating? Are the front pews at your chapel always available?

Feast upon the Word,
Sista Beehive & Sista Laurel

Being Mormon was not the most popular religious choice in the neighborhood I grew up in, added to the fact that I was an awkward teen even if you took my religious beliefs out of the equation. So I can't even imagine what my little life would have been like if my "friends" had access to a Facebook, Twitter, or any of the other social media outlets that we use today.

Growing up in the "mission field", I think most of us imagined it would be wonderful to have the opportunity to attend school with kids that shared our faith. We fantasized about the glorious sisterhood/brotherhood that must've existed in the place we believed to be Zion. We always felt that we were missing out on something by not living in Utah. I guess we thought living in the beehive state would have made us better Mormons.

Not to long ago I had a conversation with a teenager that I've known for a few years. He is also a Christian and even though we don't belong to the same denomination I have a lot of respect for what he believes and I know he has respect for me and my beliefs. Because of my profession I have developed personal relationships with a lot of parents and teenagers in my community; and for some reason they trust me...umm maybe not the parents so much, but the kids (not my kids, because those jokers only talk to me when they need something) share all types of stories with me. We talk about school, I tease them about dating, we talk about life, laughter, pains, sorrows, fear. You name it, kids talk about it. Surprisingly they even talk about religion with me, as did this particular young man. He was familiar with our churches 2013 youth theme "Stand Ye In Holy Places". He expressed his frustration with his Mormon friends and them not being very serious about the theme or their responsibility to represent the church. He said "They just seem to blow it off like it's no big deal". So, he wanted to know what it meant to me to stand in holy places, and how he could address it with his friends.

My first response was "Dude do I look like the youth or a youth leader to you?" After we both finished laughing. I explained to him as best I could what that meant to me and how it translated to him as far as his religious beliefs. I also explained to him that sometimes when there is a large population of Christians of the same denomination it can be a little more difficult to stand up for what you believe because everyone around you has the same beliefs as you. And let me tell you that if their is a loop hole in anything that people deem restrictive they will find it! For example college students running off getting married then having it annulled. I explained to him that it might be a risk to him but the best way for him to reach his friends was to call them on what they were doing. I wanted to show him the LDS Church's website so he could reference a few things (thank Gaw'd for smart phones and the internet) I noticed that the youth theme was actually "Stand Ye In Holy Places and Be Not Moved" that's a little bit of a game changer. It's one thing to stand in a holy place, it's a whole other thing to stand in a holy place and not move. Feeling like I had already said wayyy to much to this kid about my church without his parents being present, I redirected the questions back to him. We had a very refreshing discussion about what standing in a holy place without being moved meant to him. He shared with me his religious beliefs, why he believed his church was the truth for him. I like wise shared my beliefs with him.

Like I said earlier, I can't pretend to know or even understand what today's youth have to deal with. I know its stressful and scary for them and as a parent of teens its just as scary for us. Because we don't know how to help our kids navigate their way through this new world with the World Wide Web. We didn't grow up with access to the world via internet and the world didn't have access to us. My friends or enemies actually had to talk to my parents to gain access to me. They had to knock on the door and usually my parents answered. They would call my house and my mother or father answered our home phone. My parents wouldn't even allow me to have a pager (yep I'm that old). I have such an appreciation for the young men and women that I attend church with and an even greater appreciation for young men and women who even though they don't worship the way I worship are great examples to my children and the children around them.

In light of my recent conversation and with pioneer day approaching I've been somewhat nostalgic and maybe even a little home-sick. As a youth I know I stood in holy places and I was not moved! In the circle that I ran in I was usually the only Mormon. In my youth I was the "holy places", that doesn't mean that I didn't have my weakness. It just means that I was aware that my friends watched me. I was very aware of the fact that I represented my church, I was the representation of my religion. My friends didn't know who the prophet was, they didn't know the missionaries, they thought they knew based off of what they looked like but if you were a "clean cut" White dude on a bicycle, your name was Elder and you were Mormon, even if you weren't.

I didn't know it at the time but being the "only" was the best thing that could have happened to me. Being the "only" made me a better Mormon, being the "only" strengthened my testimony. Being the "only" prepared me to live where I live today and not only stand in holy places, it prepared me to Stand In Holy Places and regardless to what anyone around me is doing I WILL NOT BE MOVED. I know that God has a plan for me, and I WILL NOT BE MOVED! My stake recently participated in youth trek, there was some stories that my children (2 daughters participated) relayed to me that made feel disappointed. However, they shared several stories with me that made me feel proud. Proud as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Proud as a parent and proud to be a member of a community where teenagers are thoughtful, caring, and willing to help each other when they can. I believe that our youth are doing the best they can. I hope that as parents, leaders and a community we are doing our best to BE that anchor keeping our youth UNMOVED and helping them STAND in holy places.

Still standing,
Sista Beehive

Happy Fourth of July y'all! Today we are especially grateful to our Heavenly Father for our great nation! As we reflect on the progression of things in our church, we are filled with love and gratitude toward our Brotha's & Sista's in this gospel. We have always been bombarded with questions regarding the priesthood from both members and non-members. Many want to know how the revelation impacted our lives (even though one of us was not yet born and the other wasn't even in kindergarten yet) , we've tried to the best of our ability to answer the questions that have been thrown our way. Although it isn't always easy to be put on the spot with questions such as these, it does give and has given us opportunities to consider our feelings about the priesthood revelation, as well as understand the relationship that we'd like to have with the organization. Having opportunities to speak to others regarding our thoughts about certain aspects of our church's history has strengthened our testimonies. This past month has been an emotional roller coaster ride. In the past instead of completely dealing with some major life events that may have sent me to the psychiatric unit (on more then one occasion). I would busy myself welcoming anything that distracted me from whatever it was that I didn't really want to deal with. I know that some of y'all are wondering what kept me so busy that I couldn't give mental brain power to the problems or issues that should have demanded my attention. I had titles y'all, and I was way to busy to focus on the real crazy that was happening in my life.

I was high: I feel like I'm coming off of a 17yr high, and the crash might be more then I can physically/mentally bare! If your addiction is you're just to busy to deal, is there a rehab for that? Just a question... I've heard people talk about being so depressed that they couldn't get out of bed. I couldn't wrap my brain around how anyone could feel so sad that they physically couldn't get out of bed. Until recently that is, today I completely get it. Let me tell y'all about some of the days I've had since I've been a CEO of this house (clearly I still like titles).

Life as the CEO: I'm typically not a big sleeper. However the past month and a half, I find myself not only sleeping in more, but I've had the nerve on more then one occasion to get upset because I had to drag myself out of bed to pick my niece up from school (of course I picked her up in my pajamas) I know that you are trying to sympathize and comfort me saying "well, 8:00 am is pretty early to have to have to get up". No, that's not my story, my niece gets out of kindergarten at 11:30 am. I know, so tacky right? It has gotten to the point that on someday's I frantically get dressed right before my kids got home from school, teens can be kinda brutal. All of this is an indicator to me that something ain't right!

Seeking help: A few weeks ago I started feeling that something wasn't quite right. I hinted to those closest to me that I can't seem to snap into my happy. I told them because I didn't want them to be shocked when I left for a loaf of bread and never came back home (is that wrong, of course it is... right?) Asking myself if something is wrong is no longer a question, because I know it is. I had been trying to convince myself that what I was feeling was normal and every SAHM (stay at home mom) feels this way. Even though I know they don't. At least not as often as I do, according to the ones I've spoken to.

This morning I sat down to finish a blog post that I started a few weeks ago. I found myself sitting here staring at the computer screen for I don't even know how long. Then I thought, "let me just check my Facebook real quick", 40 minutes later. I'm staring at the computer screen again, talking myself out of having a complete melt down. For what I don't know, that's what I'm trying to tell you! Nothing, nothing happened in between the time I got out of bed, made a bowl of oatmeal, and sat down to complete a post that I've been working on it for two weeks (which should have actually only taken me a few hours to complete) and checked my Facebook. I have no idea why I'm staring at the computer screen fighting tears and the urge to snatch all of my hair out.

Conversations must be had: I found myself having a conversation with myself.... Look don't judge me, like you've never had one of these:
Me: What's wrong with me?
Self: I don't know...
Me: Why do I feel this way? I can't feel this way!
Self: I don't know, I've been trying to figure it out too.
Me: Do you think I'm depressed?
Self: Probably
Me: Maybe I should see somebody about it
Self: Now, that's just crazy! You just need to pray and read your scriptures more
Me: More then I already do? No, I'm just going to make an appt to talk to someone
Self: If you spoke to Jesus more maybe you wouldn't feel this way! I'm just saying.

What? That's it, that was the conversation...

Is depression a Sin?As I was trying to figure out why my conversation (with myself) took the tone that it did I realized that I had heard so many other people say things like "Sista Jones is depressed, umm she should have stronger faith." or "If she would just follow the Word of Wisdom better and exercise more she would feel better, happier!" I've even heard someone say that depression was an act of selfishness. I didn't contribute to the conversation because I didn't feel that I personally had anything to contribute. When some of the comments were being made the spirit would testified to my heart as immediately as a person would make the statement that it was false! So I didn't waste my time trying to convince the person making the statement that depression was not a sin, it was an illness just like any other illness.

Praise or Prozac: Yes, I need Jesus but Jesus isn't the only thing I need. As I came to the realization that I may need some outside help, I started having feelings of guilt. I asked myself, self, "why do you feel guilt?" The only thing I could think is I have guilt because of what I've heard people say about depression in the past. I remember hearing that a missionary was sent home because he was struggling with depression, I couldn't understand why someone would be sent home for being sad. Over the years I'd come up with my own justification for why a missionary would be sent home because he was depressed. In my opinion... It doesn't profit God to have Faithful Foolish Followers, now before you guys start snapping let me explain. With all the technology that God has provided for our comfort including modern medicine, what type of sense does it make for me to not get help even if it comes in the form of a medication that might make me feel like a complete person? There are many things that I don't know, but what I do know is that I can't serve God the way that I need to in these funky pajamas. I know that I can't go bare testimony and convince anyone that God's goodness changes lives and brings joy and happiness with my hair looking like who did it, what for, and please don't do it again! If I'm going to fully praise His name I feel that I should look the part, and looking the part may require some help from someone qualified to help me. For some people Jesus is enough, but sometimes some of us may need to see a doctor, others might need medication, and others may need both. It's not a crime and it's certainly not a sin to seek outside help to feel and become your best self. The real sin is not using the gifts that Heavenly Father has made available to us because He knows that when His followers feel whole and complete. We can better glorify His name. Having just decided that I was going to share my real with my Brothas & Sistas, I can honestly say that I don't know what a Dr. is going to tell me about how and why I feel the way I do. If she/he tells me that I need some Prozac to help me get back into praise mode, I will be ok with that because the reality is at this time in my life I might need both: A lot of praise with a little Prozac to restore balance to my life.

Have you ever felt depressed? Does being depressed make you a bad Christian? Have you ever been told that if you would spend more time in praise, there would be no time for Prozac?

***Prozac, is really the only depression medication that I know of. I'm sure there are others, people just don't talk about them as often***

Still Blessed,

Sista Beehive

Right now! Re-reading that statement isn’t going to change what we just shared with you. You are reading it right, we said we could actually contact our stake presidents and ask to serve a service mission right now, and you probably could too. However, that’s not the purpose of this post. While looking up information about serving a service mission we came across a few web-sites that we found very interesting. The first one is LDS Tech, it had information about serving in the Inner-city, we don’t know why that sparked our interest (seriously, we really don’t :/) but it did. Because no matter how much they like you, they will be tempted to slap the Black off of you! Un-like when our mama’s threaten to slap the Black off of us, your Black is probably going to slide right off of your face.

Seriously, Ebonics is more then just a few “slang” words thrown together. While most people don’t think of it as an actual language, to those living in Urban America it’s the language that encompasses where we as a people come from, it’s thought of by many as part of our African American Vernacular. The missionaries who are the most successful in the inner-city are those willing to embrace our culture in a non-judgmental way. So, in the future when you receive your mission call and it says that you are going to the San Diego, California Mission, Foreign speaking: Ebonics, don’t be alarmed.
